Expensive engagement rings are the norm

According to a survey conducted by Brides.com, the average amount spent on an engagement ring has rocketed from $4,400 in 2006, to $6,300 today. This a rise of 43%.

Whether this is due to couples seeing their engagement ring as a form of investment, or down to the fact that today’s infatuation with celebrity weddings and celebrity engagement rings is encouraging couples to push the boat out, is unclear.

In fact, some polls have concluded that the average price of an engagement rings has actually fallen in the period outlined above.

I don’t think spending a large sum of money on an engagement ring is a bad thing. At least you get something that is lasting and that can be treasured and passed from generation to generation. Antique engagement rings and vintage engagement rings are all the rage now. I only wished there were a few more unique engagement rings in my family.

More celebrity engagement rings

Following the rumours that Jake Gyllenhaal was spotted shopping for an engagement ring for Reese Witherspoon in New York, it now appears that Kimberley Walsh’s boyfriend is looking aswell.

Not wanting to be outdone by Ashley Cole (who bought Cheryl a £50,000 engagement ring), Kimberly’s boyfriend has been saving so that he can buy his Girls Aloud partner an equally impressive celebrity engagement ring.

There are also rumours that Paul McCartney and his girlfriend, Nancy Shevell, were also engagement ring shopping. If you think Ashley Cole and Jake Gyllenhaal have big ring budgets, they have nothing on Sir Paul.

I hope all of these recent ring shopping stories are true. I love seeing the rings chosen by celebrities. Some thimes they pick fantastic and really unique enagement rings, yet at other times their ring choices are totally bewildering. One thing is certian though, whatever ring they choose, they always cost a lot of money.

Check back in the future to see photos of the celebrity engagement rings.

The anatomy of engagement rings

There are lots of terms that are often associated with rings. If you are aiming to purchase one of the thousands of engagement rings on the market, it is a good idea to have a rough idea of what you’re going to be buying. That way you’ll stand a better chance of getting the perfect ring at the right price.

Engagement rings are usually made of three parts. The band is the ring shaped part, and this forms the base of the engagement ring. The band is traditionally made of gold, but it can be platinum, white gold or silver.

The setting is attached to the band. The setting holds the stone in place. Most of the time, the setting is in the same metal as the band. Therefore, if the band of the engagement ring is made of gold, then the setting will usually be made of gold too.

The final part of most engagement rings is the stone. This is the focus of the ring, the most crucial and important element. Traditionally the stone would always have been a diamond, but this is not the case with engagement rings today. Often people will opt to go for a stone that looks like a diamond (but doesn’t bear the same price tag!), or a different gemstone entirely.

Once you have decided upon the type of stone required, you must also consider the cut of the stone. There are several cuts and the choice of one over the other can dramatically change the overall look of the ring.

Traditionally, the stone would have been round cut. This entails the stone being cut to the shape of a cone, with the rounded base of the cone facing outwards, revealing the diamond in all its glory.

Similar to the round cut is the princess cut. Instead of a cone, the stone is cut to resemble a square-based pyramid, with the base facing out. This is a sophisticated cut, making the stone appear large.

With the emerald cut, the stone is shaped to form an oblong. This cut works really well with expensive diamonds becasue it emphasises the stone’s clarity. Other cuts include the marquis and the oval cut.

Do pink engagement rings exist?

I’ve often heard this question asked, and the good news for all you lovers of pink is that the answer is, “Yes. Pink engagement rings do exist!”

Many companies have produced ranges of pink engagement rings, often replacing the traditional diamond with a pink sapphire or pink tourmaline stone. These pink gemstones tend to work best with platinum, silver or white gold designs.

Many craftsmen are moving away from the traditional, vintage engagement ring designs, and pink gemstones are being used in lots of contemporary engagement rings. If you are looking for a modern take, perhaps one of the pink engagement rings is for you.

Tips on Buying Diamond Engagement Rings

Jamey’s Store blog has posted a useful guide for those shopping for diamond engagement rings in L.A. Although some of the tips are only useful to shoppers in Los Angeles, others can be applied universally.

I really liked the mention of the 4 Cs - cut, clarity, colour and carat weight. These the key elements to consider when looking at the the diamonds will be featured in diamond engagement rings.

Jake Gyllenhaal looks at Engagement Rings

According to rumours that are flying around the net, Jake Gyllenhaal has been spotted looking at engagement rings in New York. Apparently he spent 4 hours in the Fred Leighton jewelry store trying to pick out an engagement ring for his girlfriend, Reese Witherspoon.

I wonder what his budget is? If the stories are true, I can’t wait to see his choice 0f engagement ring. I bet he’s going to spend considerably more than the £18 Marks & Spencer is charging for their ‘credit crunch special’ engagement rings. See more details here.
